200kW ETA Hack Woodchip Biomass Boiler Installation Caithness

200kW ETA Hack Woodchip Biomass Boiler Installation Caithness

Our client at Stemster Mains Farm, Halkirk, near Caithness in the far north of Scotland was looking for a biomass heating system to supply heat to four buildings and one grain drier. The installation took place between October and November 2013 and the installation took approximately four weeks to complete.

Heat is supplied by an ETA HACK 200kW wood chip boiler. The biomass boiler is installed in an area of the customer’s existing shed in a purpose built timber framed plant room alongside an Akvaterm 7500 Litre thermal storage cylinder and a 500 Litre expansion vessel.

Immediately adjacent to the plant room is a custom built timber frame wood chip hopper containing a 4.5 metre rotary agitator with screw auger to auto-feed the chips directly to the boiler.

The boiler is connected to each of the properties and the grain drier via Calpex Duo insulated underground pipework. We have used various pipe diameters of 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 63mm which have been sized to minimize pressure drop as well as heat loss. The combined length of district heat main is 564 metres. All civil works including trenching and backfill to original state was included for the full run of the district heat main.

In each of the properties we have connected the pipework from the boiler in to an appropriately sized braised plate heat exchanger. We have then connected to the customer’s existing heating and hot water systems using s-plan connections. We have used only premium quality Geberit copper and carbon steel pipework in all four properties.

Additional Information:
This project was designed for the future addition of a grain dryer tray and 200 kW heat exchanger.
