Plug-in Car Grant extended, and Plug-in Van Grant introduced
The Department of Transport announced on January 17th that the existing grant scheme for electric vehicles, the Plug-in Car Grant, will be extended to 2015. The scheme allows motorists to claim a grant worth 25% of the purchase price of an approved electric vehicle, up to the value of £5,000.
The cars currently eligible for the grant are:

|Nissan Leaf||On sale now|
|Peugeot iOn||On sale now|
|Renault Fluence ZE||March 2012|

The announcement of the extension of the scheme was also coupled with the announcement that electric vans will now be able to qualify for a Plug-in Van Grant as well. The grant available for electric vans will be up to 20% of the purchase price up to a limit of £8,000. This aims to increase uptake of electric vehicles among businesses and reduce emissions in towns and cities across the UK.
Electric vehicles can become part of a renewable energy solution for you and your home. Tied in with microgeneration of electricity through solar panels or wind turbine they can help reduce your total energy bill. Many electric vehicles can now achieve ranges of over 100 miles, so if you drive less than this per day these vehicles could easily work well for you. Driving 100 miles in an electric car would likely cost less than £2 in electricity from traditional sources. However if you generated your own electricity through solar panels you could either charge the car directly with the energy you produce or, more likely if you were charging your car overnight, use your income from the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) to pay for your car’s electricity use. This would reduce your energy costs even further.
